Quoting IT: Oracle and Linux

"Or, perhaps, I should say that Oracle is firing a shot at the heart of Red Hat, and commercial Linux?

This really, really ticks me off.

Oracle's claims as to why it felt it had to make this move are BS."

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, "Oracle's Red Hat rip-off", Linux-Watch, October 25, 2006

Check out Linux Format's review of Oracle Linux. Oracle has to be joking. I'll be sticking with RHEL.

#2 Oracle and Redhat Story

I don't know if I would call Oracle's fork of Red Hat a joke, but at the very least it's a fascinating story. I am finding my self obsessed with the whole Oracle-Red Hat story just as I was in the beginning of the SCO vs. Linux event.

I think what makes the Oracle-Redhat story so fascinating is that the perspectives from those on the business side and those on the information technology side don't meet. From the business side, Oracle move to move into Red Hat's market makes sense. However, from an IT perspective, the reasons for Oracle moving into Red Hat's territory doesn't make sense (and in my opinion untrue). Forget the fundamentals of business, Oracle hasn't proven they really seem to understand the fundamentals of Linux. There is alot more involved than just source code when it comes to Linux support. If I had to choose between the companies, my feather would remain in Red Hat's cap.

The following CNET article, "Oracle has yet to prove Linux cred", is a good read for anyone interested on this topic.
