SilverStripe is 2008's Most Promising Open Source CMS
SilverStripe was announced as the winner of Packt Publishing's 2008 Most Promising Open Source CMS Award.
SilverStripe is today exclusively revealed as the winner of the 2008 Most Promising Open Source Content Management System. The SilverStripe project receive $2,000, holding off strong competition from CMS Made Simple in the first runner up position with ImpressCMS and MiaCMS finishing joint second runner up.
Packt Publishing notes that SilverStripe's core team is heavily involved in not only their product but also with SilverStripe's users.
It received universal approval from the judges for its features and was praised as an excellent option for companies who want a powerful open source website that is professionally created and well supported. The judges were complimentary about SilverStripe’s scalability, use of Ajax, its healthy community and the impressive levels of input on the forums from its developers.
I had the honor of being one of the judges on the panel for Packt Publishing's 2008 Most Promising Open Source CMS Award. My vote also went for SilverStripe followed by ImpressCMS for second place and CMS Made Simple for third place. Since I wasn't sure how the other judges on the panel were going to vote, I'm always a little nervous of being too far off from the consensus. Needless to say, I feel validated. In a few days, I'll throw my notes online for how I ranked all five finalists in the most promising category.
For the record, I have no financial ties with Packt Publishing. They do send me a few books for review and for my participation as a judge for their CMS awards, but to this date no money has ever been exchanged. Yes, given all the free publicity I have given Packt Publishing I'm sure there are a few of you that are surprised. I just feel any company that helps promote content management, especially open source conent management systems, deserves some recognition. In my opinion, Packt Publishing has been doing us all a great service in this regard.

Very humbled!
Bryan, the team at SilverStripe is very excited with this result. We look forward to your seeing your notes on how you ranked the projects, as we're always interested in constructive feedback.
Likewise, we also very appreciative of Packtpub for their awards, as they've been helping the public make sense of the millions of CMS options out there. (We're also a happy customer of several Packtpub books!)
By Wednesday
Sigurd,
I expect to have my notes up in the Tuesday/Wednesday time frame. There is the possibility of Monday...but that depends how much laundry and yardwork gets done over the weekend!
Another day, another dollar
OK...let's make that Thursday morning CST before I release those notes. I've been very busy this week and also found my attention was focused on the U.S. presidential election.

My notes and comments for this award have been posted:
Judging five most promising Content Management Systems
Hidden fees: Modules As Payware
.
To Be Real, Or To Be Dreaming...
I have a big problems with CMS's that claim that they are GNU /GPL and have basic, almost essential modules /extensions that is PAYWARE! SilverStripe is one of those that need payware modules. The other PacktPub runner-ups-winners CMS Made Simple, ImpressCMS and MiaCMS is completly open source INCL. MODULES! That is open source CMS!
I mean... who can really set up a basic website without basic modules as Blog, News, Articles, PicGallery, Forum or "comments"!?
A CMS that claim to be THE MOST PROMISING CMS MUST have a full community-site module package or otherwise it is NOT fully open source (IMHO that is). SilverStripe is OUT!
In my oppinion the 2008 winner is impresscms since it has all FREE extensions according to GNU /GPL and make it possible to run also big sites according to GNU /GPL. It was also started in december 2007. Perhaps You are not impelled to analyse this in the Award analysis? CMS Made Simple has already taken part for 2 years...and should not be regarded as "promising" any more. CMSMS is an over all winner anyway! Second to Impresscms is MiaCMS. Although the future for thiese is quite different since impresscms have close to 30 EXPERIENCED DEVELOPERS and MiaCMS have ~5.
IMPRESSCMS IS THE REAL WINNER!
CmsReport is a great site wich brings facts and possibility for heavy comments on choosing CMS-wares, thanks!!!

SilverStripe modules are free.
Morgan, could you please indicate why you feel SilverStripe modules are payware? I agree with your sentiment that modules like those you describe should be free in an "open source CMS". However all SilverStripe modules _are_ free.
They are downloadable from:
www.silverstripe.com/modules
And where they are not yet ready for use without technical knowledge, a larger set is available at:
http://open.silverstripe.com/browser/mod...
( and from our subversion link )
Modules payware
Just compare at cms matrix! See built in applications.
http://www.cmsmatrix.org/matrix
I have looked everywhere and can not find any acknowledgement that the modules are free... and "matrix" says some essential modules are at a cost... payware!
Articles out on the web also state that SilverStripe is a N. Zealand lite version of a bigger payware (w. completly other name wich makes modules payware).
If this is false, please state otherwise with reference!
I love to here that I am wrong although so many say SilverStripe is a nice piece of software.

If you visit the links I
If you visit the links I mentioned above you will be able to witness first hand that you can download the modules, and if you open the downloads you will note the licensing is BSD (open source).
At CMS Matrix there is no mention of anything costing extra:
http://www.cmsmatrix.org/matrix/cms-matr...
(There was one item, 'content staging', which was set to 'costs extra' which was incorrect, and I have set this to 'yes')
Any "Articles out on the web also state that SilverStripe is a N. Zealand lite version of a bigger payware" are stating falsehoods. Please show me where these are.
Silverstripe and modules under BSD
Morgan, I too find it disturbing when you get a "free and open" CMS only to find that you have to pay money for needed functionality. However, Silverstripe isn't one of these CMS. In fact, I'm not aware of any of the five CMS that were reviewed for the most promising charging money for their modules.
As Sigurd has already mentioned, Silverstripe is under the open source BSD license. You can find some reasoning as to why Silverstripe chose BSD over GPL for the license at Silverstripe.com and even here at CMS Report.
While CMS Matrix may be a good starting point, I think you're better off verifying whether the information is accurate or not at the project or company's own Website. I've heard a number of complaints lately regarding CMS Matrix not being up to date or inaccurate so let's be careful out there.
