SiteGround web hosting company recently announced the launch of multiple new functionalities in its customized cPanel theme Crystal. The most important new additions were specifically requested by customers and include: multiple languages, important notices section, and instant full and partial backups.

After the launch of the company’s customized cPanel’s theme Crystal in the beginning of March, SiteGround has requested feedback from customers on what features they would like to see embedded in Crystal. The top two user suggestions were multilanguage support and instant backups. Just a few weeks later, the company introduced the requested enhancements.

SiteGround has translated its customized theme in 11 languages by now and is working on adding 5 more language options. The language options feature is already recognized as a great convenience by the large international customer community of SiteGround.

Since last week, customers also have the option to make instant full or partial backups for free through their cPanel. The company has developed a custom backup script that allows customers to backup their whole accounts, databases or just email filters and forwarders. The script was specifically made so that it should save resources and not load the servers, unlike the default solutions available before.

SiteGround also upgraded the cPanel Notices section available in Crystal to ensure uninterrupted email services. Alerts will be displayed when any email account goes beyond the email quota and guidelines on how to optimize that particular inbox will be available.

"We received lots of suggestions and feedback from our customers through Facebook, Twitter, our forum and our blog. All we had to do was listen to what users need and make it happen as soon as possible. It is just great that we have the opportunity to talk to our clients, discuss their ideas and add value to their Crystal experience" says Radostina Kesova, Marketing Specialist at SiteGround.

Webmin and Virtualmin: The web control panel alternative

I'm currently in the process of moving CMS Report and some other sites I manage to a new VPS.  The original reason for the change was to move my sites off of a legacy version of Linux (Fedora Core 2).  However, I'm also making the server change because of too much bleeding edge experimentation by yours truly that has brought my server's stability into question.  Believe it or not, a reboot of the server doesn't fix everything!

I was also hoping that the transition between servers would be an opportunity to move my control panel from cPanel to Virtualmin.  Virtualmin is actually a module for the web-based system administration application, Webmin.  More importantly, Virtualmin is used for "managing multiple virtual hosts through a single interface, like Plesk or Cpanel" and the open source GPL version is a free for the using.  My hope was to shave off the $10 extra I'm from my monthly fee for the VPS.

cPanel 11: Newest version of the control panel coming soon

When I originally started hosting my own sites on a server (VPS/VDS), I opted for the easy way to manage those sites by using an online control panel. I originally started with Plesk but eventually moved to cPanel. cPanel at the time seemed to be the control panel everyone was talking about. However, I quickly found that although I liked cPanel it seemed to be dated by the fact that its primary web server support was for Apache 1.x. Support for Apache 2.x was promised in the next version of the control panel, cPanel 11, so I waited patiently for its arrival.

After waiting for months, I found myself waiting even more for a stable version of cPanel 11 to arrive. I began to wonder if it was not time to take another look at Plesk. So just when I've almost given up on cPanel, the company has finally started to publicly announced that cPanel is coming soon.

cPanel 11 promises to bring a lot of improvements for users. The following are some of the highlights I am most excited to see in cPanel 11:

Drupal Community: Fantastico De Luxe is "an insecure recipe for disaster"

"Fantastico De Luxe by Netenberg is an add-on for the popular cPanel web management software, available on many web hosting providers. It promises an easy, turn-key installation of dozens of web applications, including the Drupal CMS.

Unfortunately, while it may appear to fulfill those promises, the only thing Fantastico really gives you is a broken, insecure install that is hard to update. That's why we strongly advise the Drupal community not to use Fantastico to install and run a production Drupal site."
