Our CMS Focus page lists the top 30 content management systems that we want to discuss most here at CMS Report. It has been more than a year and a half since I made any changes to this list and so I decided it was time to make some significant changes. On this page you'll now find 10 new CMS that have been added to the list as well as ten previously listed CMS that were "retired" to the "Hall of Fame".

The applications listed under CMS Focus are not necessarily the biggest and most popular in content management, but instead are CMSs that for whatever reason have caught and kept my attention. If you find value in the CMS Focus page then that's great news and I'm glad I could help. If you find little value in lists such as these, that's fine too and I hope that you can find other content here at CMS Report that at least plays a role in your quest for a better CMS solution.

For those curious, the following ten web applications were added to CMS Focus:

CMIS for Open Content Management Collaboration with Hippo and Nuxeo

Boston, Paris and Amsterdam, the Netherlands – June 14, 2011 – Hippo, a leading vendor of commercial Java Open Source Web Content Management is proud to announce a new technical alliance with Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM Platform) company.

The two companies have built an ECM/WCM connector based on the OASIS CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services) standard.  A webinar with a demonstration of this connector will take place on July 20th.

Both Nuxeo and Hippo are open source, Java-based, CMIS-compliant platforms, so the partnership between the two is a natural extension – bringing high value functionality to developers, content architects and end users of both systems.   The Hippo/Nuxeo connector benefits from a high degree of flexibility and ensures that content coming from any source within the organization can be easily integrated into both platforms.
“The Hippo CMS and Hippo Portal helps empower our customer’s audiences, by driving multi-channel, multi-lingual, multi-site solutions,” said Hippo CEO Jeroen Verberg. “The CMIS connector to Nuxeo applications adds yet another possibility for the online communication of content. And, of course a connector between these two open source, Java-based platforms is quite empowering for organizations who need a scalable system that can grow and integrate with other tools.”

Nuxeo Document Management Now Offers Digital Signature Option

Boston, Paris – Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform company, now offers a Digital Signature add-on for its flagship Open Source Document Management software, Nuxeo DM. Based on the X.509 standard, the new component provides a secure electronic method for signing PDF files in Nuxeo DM and verifying the signatures with a digital certificate in a PDF reader.

When used with Nuxeo Document Management, the Digital Signature option helps to ensure compliance and audit trails, and replaces paper-intensive signing with more efficient electronic processes. Content and information architects and developers who require a digital signing mechanism that provides user authentication and document integrity verification will benefit from this new option, that helps organizations move towards the goal of a paperless office.

The Digital Signature component provides a standards-compliant mechanism for adding user-specific digital signatures to PDF documents, so that any print-and-sign paper processes can be replaced with electronic signing, storage and retrieval document management processes. The add-on:

  • creates password-protected, reusable digital certificates for Nuxeo DM users,
  • enables multiple Nuxeo DM users to digitally sign a PDF document,
  • attaches digital certificates to documents, for subsequent verification of the signature by an external PDF reader.

“We’ve seen an increasing number of requests for digital signature capabilities,” noted Nuxeo CEO Eric Barroca. “Customers prefer to handle documents electronically end-to-end, rather than going through the time-consuming steps of printing, signing, scanning, faxing, and filing. In the long run, using Nuxeo DM digital signing will increase productivity and make information sharing easier.”

Boston – June 1, 2011. Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform company, released a new version of Nuxeo Document Management and Nuxeo Enterprise Platform today. Nuxeo DM 5.4.2 offers a host of usability and social features to make the user experience even smoother and more streamlined. Key contributions highlight the value of community involvement in the strategy of continuous innovation for the Nuxeo platform.

The release of Nuxeo DM 5.4.2 and its underlying platform, Nuxeo EP, demonstrates execution on a vision of ongoing innovation, community engagement, and open standards support, delivered to content management application architects and developers. Driven by community feedback, many of the new features and enhancements improve usability of the application, using state-of-the-art technologies and standards, such as OpenSocial, OAuth, HTML5, WebDAV, and CMIS.

The new WSS connector was contributed by Nuxeo partner Gagnavarslan, an ECM solution provider in Iceland. The Nuxeo and Gagnavarslan teams collaborated to integrate this new component after passing the Nuxeo QA process. With this connector, the Nuxeo repository can be mapped as a drive under MS Windows or Mac OS X. "We are building a range of ECM services based on Nuxeo, and our clients need a smooth desktop integration into an existing Microsoft Windows infrastructure," said Jónas Sigurðsson, Development Manager at Gagnavarslan in Iceland. “Our group of developers in Kiev reverse engineered the existing WSS protocol to support Windows 7, Windows XP and the latest MS Office versions directly in Nuxeo EP. We support the open source paradigm and are happy to contribute our work back to the Nuxeo community."

Mailbag: Nuxeo EP and DM 5.3.2 released

This past weekend, I returned from a two week camping vacation in the mountains of Colorado. During those two weeks of little Internet connection...a lot of good content management stories came my way via email but were not posted here at CMS Report. I've decided to go through my mailbag this week and post some of the better stories that were missed in my absence.

A couple weeks ago, Stefane Fermigier sent us an email regarding the release of Nuxeo EP and DM 5.3.2, an ECM Platform and Document Management application. Stefane writes:

I'm very happy to announce that we have released Nuxeo EP and DM 5.3.2 today.

The release notes are here:

http://blogs.nuxeo.com/dev/2010/07/nuxeo-dm-532-is-available.html

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this release, which I believe is the strongest we've done so far, and also the one that took the less effort to create thanks to the build and QA process we've put in place in the last year.

We have other new releases coming up in the following days: Nuxeo DAM 1.1 and Nuxeo CMF, and the next release of Nuxeo DM will be Nuxeo DM 5.4, scheduled around October this year.

Remember also that we have the Nuxeo World conference in November: http://www.nuxeo.com/about/events/nuxeoworld2010

Meanwhile, I hope you will enjoy using Nuxeo DM 5.3.2. We've upgraded our intranet to use this version (over 5.3.1) in the final days of testing the new release, and I can tell you it is noticeably snappier and overall more pleasant to use than the 5.3.1.

You can find additional details of this new version of Nuxeo on Stefane's blog. I've also embedded a video on what's new in Nuxeo DM 5.3 below.

Open Source DAM Solution For Managing Rich Media Assets Now Available

BOSTON, February 4, 2010--Nuxeo, the Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) company, announced today the general availability of its open source Digital Asset Management offering Nuxeo DAM.

Nuxeo DAM is the latest application based on the Nuxeo open source ECM platform, Nuxeo EP. Nuxeo DAM addresses the complex and resource-intensive demands of managing the rich media assets that companies rely on. Designed to meet the creative and ever-changing needs of marketing and brand managers, as well as the custodians of digital artifacts in education, government, military and cultural institutions, Nuxeo's digital asset management software opens up new opportunities for the creators, users and consumers of rich media to take control of their critical image, video or audio content.

According to Nuxeo CEO Eric Barroca:

Nuxeo DAM has the same high level of flexibility as its underlying platform - Nuxeo EP - thanks to its extension-point, plug-in infrastructure. Thus, Nuxeo DAM can be adapted and customized to create a new kind of media-intensive content application matching ever-evolving business and creative needs.

Nuxeo DAM is the first application of its kind to meet the currently available draft of the OASIS Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) specification. Nuxeo, along with many other industry leaders such as Microsoft, IBM, and Adobe Systems, is involved with CMIS. CMIS is a proposed standard for interoperability across multiple ECM and web content management systems that is expected to be approved this year. Nuxeo EP, as the underlying ECM platform offering from Nuxeo, includes a CMIS Server, based on the latest CMIS specification, ensuring that packaged applications such as Nuxeo DAM and Nuxeo DM benefit from the interoperability enhancements.

Cheryl McKinnon, Nuxeo, and Open Source

This is one of those rare posts where I post an article about a change in the executive ranks of a CMS company. However, thanks to Jon Marks and his CMS gurus on Twitter list I've been a Twitter follower of this person.  Cheryl McKinnon is moving from Open Text to Nuexo as their Chief Marketing Officer. Nuxeo is one of the leading provider of open source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software and services.

"Cheryl has a broad spectrum of ECM experience and is a superb marketer, strategist, trend spotter and evangelist, which makes her the perfect match for Nuxeo at this point in our growth," said CEO Eric Barroca. "Nuxeo's open source technology has a deep feature set and rich functionality that rivals far costlier, cumbersome and complex proprietary ECM systems. With 350+ customers, tens of thousand of downloads, nearly 65 percent of sales outside of France, and a strong demand from the North American market, Cheryl will be instrumental in helping Nuxeo evolve into a global force." [Source]

What's interesting to me is that one of the reasons Cheryl made the move to Nuxeo is because Nuxeo is an open source company. On her blog she writes:

So why Nuxeo, why now? The Open Source angle fascinated me. Could something really be Free? And Good? And have a nice UI? Maybe I really have drunk the Kool-Aid on the concepts of transparency, openness, flatness, simplification. Over the last 18 months I've been living and breathing the world of Enterprise 2.0 and what it means to be 'Social' inside business and strive for collaboration with customers and partners. It just all makes more sense now.
