The failure of Technology Break 2009

Last month I began my annual break from technology. Using previous technology breaks as my guide, I had expected to spend a lot less time at the computer and cell phone. My plan was simple, straight forward, and summarized in a simple slogan, Blog Less, Relax more. A month later, I write this blog post with the realization that my Technology Break of 2009 was a complete utter failure.

It's not that I didn't try to take a break from technology. In fact, my family even spent a week long trip camping in northern Minnesota. However, even there I couldn't let that week go by without checking the weather conditions on the Internet or sending a few tweets to my Twitter account. As I tried to reduce my pace of blog postings, I found myself consuming my "free time" by staying tuned to Twitter. In my defense, I felt somewhat obligated to be on Twitter since at the start of my tech break I was being considered one of the top CMS gurus on Twitter. How could I remain silent about content management after landing on such a list? It would have been miserably impossible if I tried.

I'd like to say that at least I kept my blog postings to a minimum during the break. Perhaps I did. But the fact that I posted at least 20 articles during the past month is hardly what I call proof that I spent my time away from the computer. Even without the PC, I found myself on the Nintendo Wii too much. How could I resist not playing Mario Cart when my wife and child were having so much fun playing the game? Real geeks don't step away from such challenges.

Social Networking May Take Away as Much as It Gives

Internet Evolution: "So, here's the question: How is it that, a few short years ago, we were more than satisfied with looking at the newspaper to find show times, or reading the Food Section to find out about new restaurants, or unfolding a paper depiction of routes and geological features to get directions, or picking up the phone to call someone if we wanted to find out how they were -- but now we need to get all this immediately from the Internet?

I'm a big fan of Elgg, a free and open source social software that allows you to build your own social networks.  So it is with great surprise to me that I haven't really covered a lot of news about Elgg here at CMSReport.com.  Take a look at a recent post by Dave Tosh for some examples of the latest Elgg powered sites on the Web.  If that's not enough for you to judge how well Elgg can run social media sites...than Dave has more examples of Elgg sites to show you.

Elgg 1.5 is the latest version of the software with download links available at the official Elgg site.  Hopefully, we'll find more time to cover Elgg in the coming months.

Blogging and Social Media Tips for Real Estate Market

Lorelle on Wordpress: "The Real Estate world has changed dramatically since I was directly involved. Then, social media meant being an active member in your community, going to social events, meeting people how and when you could, signing deals on the hoods of cars, chasing down every lead you could with phone calls, brochures, newsletters, signs, social meetings…I guess little has changed.

What is different is that while some of the old marketing techniques work, the web changes things..."

Build a Social Networking Website using Drupal 6 with New Book

Packt is pleased to announce a new book on Drupal that will guide users in creating and managing their own social networking website, using powerful and feature rich social networking modules. Written by Content Management expert, Michael Peacock, Drupal 6 Social Networking will help users in promoting and marketing their website using the Drupal CMS platform.

Drupal is a free Open Source modular framework and Content Management System (CMS). Drupal is extremely scalable, making it ideal for both a simple personal website as well as an industrial strength commercial or institutional web presence. Written in the programming language PHP/MySQL, its power and flexibility combined with its exceptional design means it is one of the most popular choices for creating a CMS website.

This book will guide users from the basics of both Drupal and Social Networking right through to more complicated aspects, like creating their own custom design and features for their website. It will walk users through the creation of a custom module, making use of Google Maps, to illustrate how easily the social network can be extended to meet their needs. It will also introduce users to Drupal themes to install and enable new themes and customize the existing ones.

In addition to this, the book looks at communicating with the users of the social network through mailing lists, theme changes and Twitter feeds, to keep them up to date, and improve user retention. Through this book users will learn some useful methods for promoting their website through Search Engine Optimization, Online Marketing, and a range of new Social Media.

Drupal 6 Social Networking: Communicating with Users

Our users can communicate with one another, which is great, but quite often as an administrator the need may arise for us to communicate with a user or users on our site. It may be to remind them about the web site or to inform active users about new changes to the site, which they may not have been made aware of.

In this tutorial, you will learn:

Coerced into Social Networking Sites

Julia Angwin of the Wall Street
Journal
recently wrote that she
wanted to remake herself into a new person...at least into a new person as seen by Google.  When Ms Angwin searched on Google using her own name she continued to see an
old article written by her on top of the search results page .  Although the link to the old article was popular, she didn't feel the article was her best work nor that it reflected who she was today.  She then starts on an adventure into search engine optimization (SEO) as she tries to get
what she tries to get the search engine to list instead the artides and Internet sites she would want people to see on top of the search results page.

Personally, I don't
have any issue with search engines determining which of my work, sites, and references to me float to the top of the results page.  If a search engine decides to
use my name as reference to Internet pages that best reflect who I
am....hooray for me. If a search engine points to something truthful about me in an embarrassing way, that is fine too because it will serve as a reminder to me just how much I have learned and evolved since that page was posted.

What I do have a problem with is when Internet surfers are
pointed to another Bryan Ruby that isn't me.  I do not like it when people are searching for me on the Internet and find another me that isn't me.  I'm sure there are others that feel the same way as I do.
