All of us already aware that with the advent of Touch SmartPhone, there is a greater demand in the market for utilities and applications developed for the mobile platform.  Now these needs can be addressed in two ways:

  1. Native Applications specific to Mobile platforms like iPhone, Android, Windows, Symbian, and Blackberry

  2. Enabling Web Sites / Web Applications to be delivered on Mobile, This is called as Web2Mobile

Native Applications require development of application using software development kits (SDK) specific to platforms like iPhone, Android etc, or even use Mobile Cross-Platform App development platforms like RhoMobile, PhoneGap etc. The challenging aspect here of course is in testing and deploying applications on various versions of the platforms like Android, iOS, Blackberry etc.

Sharepoint 2010 vs WCM Platforms

Sharepoint 2010 has just been released and everyone is excited about the possibilities and the unique advantage it can lend to their business. Specifically, there has been a lot of talk about Sharepoint’s new web content management capabilities. A lot of folks are wondering if they could possibly use the new Sharepoint release as the technology stack to maintain both their enterprise collaboration needs and their corporate website. In this article, we will review the new Sharepoint 2010 web content management capabilities and how they may fit your organization’s strategic website objectives at this time.

Sharepoint Capabilities

Let’s begin our discussions by reviewing, at a very high level, what specific business problems Sharepoint was meant to solve.

Microsoft designed Sharepoint as a collaboration platform to address specific business needs, such as – Collaboration, Secure Portals, Data Integration, Document Management, Records Management, Search & Discovery…

Further to this, the platform offers robust APIs, which allow extension of the base platform to third party solutions that address specific business needs for corporations in the mid to enterprise markets.

Sharepoint is generally viewed in the market as an ECM (Enterprise Content Management) platform with enriched web editing capabilities. It has inbuilt support for collaboration, back office integration, secure role based access, workflows & business process automation, document indexing, search & discovery capabilities. Most of all it offers some capacity for consistent branding and layouts across the organization.

Ephox Acquires WebRadar

Acquisition Enables New Proactive Management Capabilities for Web Content Management Systems

Ephox, a leading provider of software for improving web content management (WCM), today announced it has acquired the WebRadar product line from Web Presence Architects, a web strategy consulting firm.  With WebRadar, Ephox delivers a web content intelligence system that provides content administrators and project managers with an easy way to proactively monitor and manage their existing WCM solutions. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

“Organizations implement WCM to more easily create, manage and publish web content. However, it has been very difficult to gain insight into the WCM systems themselves. Features such as reporting and batch updating tend to be very limited out of the box,” said Andrew Roberts, CEO of Ephox. “As WCM deployments mature and grow in size, we see the need for more intelligence to be applied to managing the system itself. This is an exciting area and Ephox is excited to be one of the first independent solution providers in this space.”

WebRadar helps web content administrators and project managers identify, fix, and monitor problems with WCM content and processes. For example, WebRadar can determine where the bottlenecks are in a particular process, which pages are expiring within a set timeframe, which content authors are actively using the system, and which pages are assigned to specific team members. The information gained from these types of reports can help content teams be more productive and efficient in managing web content, resulting in a web site that is up-to-date and accurate.

"These habits and rituals, developed over many years now are hard to break. I find it quite staggering for instance that the collective wisdom of a very established global manufacturer is contained in folder after folder after folder of files on shared drives with seemingly very little actual captured knowledge, context or lifecycle management."
