I ran across the following article about choosing the "right" CMS this morning.  Athough I don't agree with some of the author's conclusions (especially those regarding Joomla!), he does provide some interesting views on what to look for when selecting a CMS.

WebDesignerDepot.com: "...In a market where websites need to be built faster and
easier, many developers are turning to Open Source CMS to get the job
done. Unfortunately there
are now thousands of CMS’s floating around the web and finding the
right one has become somewhat of an ordeal...."

Take a Joomla vs. Drupal Survey

raulreynoso's picture

I've created a survey intended to help determine what types of project each CMS is best suited for. I'm looking for professionals knowledgeable about either Drupal, Joomla!, or both to take the survey and add their voice to the ongoing debate over what each CMS does well.

Your input is important, please share your opinion.

Refer to my blog to learn more about the purpose of this survey.

Joomla criticism too harsh

Bryan's picture

The criticism of Joomla! was too harsh and not very constructive. Though the comment that Joomla! is evil likely caught the kind of attention the author was hoping for.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of either Joomla! or osCommerce but I hope it never shows up as an "emotional" argument here. I think when we hear great things about something we get disappointed when those expectations are not met. I expected more from Joomla! and osCommerce and they didn't deliver for me. I know the same is true for others that tried out Drupal and wasn't ready for the learning curve. Oddly, I'm that same way about Apple's OS X. I want to love the Mac but I've never received the joy I get from Linux and even Windows XP (and Windows 7).

Choosing the right CMS

As for CMSs mentioned in the arctile, I love Drupal. I’ve chosen exactly this CMS when I had to create a website urgently and had no time to read the documentation. Drupal is mostly intuitive.

But you should also keep in mind that any content management system should also provide SEO options for easy search engine optimization. And now CMSs that provide deep linking, 301 reditects, google analytics integration and other important features have more advantages over simple website control panel.
