After over 25,000 downloads of its previous version in just three short months, the XOOPS Project, one of world’s leading Open Source CMS (Content Management System), is aggressively building on this success and has released a new version of its award winning software – XOOPS 2.3.3.
This release focused on bug fixes and usability improvements. Some of the major changes are:
- improved profile and pm modules
- improved installer
- improved theme
- improved tinymce editor
The improved installer is the highlight of this release, providing an easy way to install not only the program, but also important modules. The key for this new release was an active collaboration of XOOPS developers from around the world: China, France, UK, USA, Germany, Peru, Libya, Belgium, Netherlands, and several others. The worldwide XOOPS community is one of its strength, resulting in a quick translation of new releases into over 20 languages.
XOOPS has not only a very loyal base, as the number of downloads suggests, but is also highly respected in the industry. In 2008 it was a finalist in SourceForge Community Awards and in the CMS Awards by Packt Publishing. It also won the prestigious 2008 China Open Source Software Contest Award.
As CMSWire recently stated:
With two prestigious recognitions in less than 6 months, XOOPS is flexing its muscle as a powerful, PHP based open source Web CMS. Look for more big things from XOOPS throughout 2009. Who knows, maybe that finalist spot in PacktPub.com’s contest will become a winning spot this year.
The main features of XOOPS are full modularization where modules can be installed/uninstalled/activated/deactivated with a mouse click, its versatile Group Permissions System, and a theme-based skinnable interface, where both admins and users can change the look of the entire website with just a click of a mouse. There are hundreds of themes and modules available for free download. With the most popular modules like News, Discussion Forums, Photo Galleries, Calendars, Jobs and Classifieds sections, Polls, Video presentations, it's very easy for anyone to set up a "Community Website". And since XOOPS is Open Source, the users can also contribute to the development.
Some of the other highlights of XOOPS are: Database-driven, personalization of individual users, multi-language capability, high security, web based admin with a friendly user interface, easy to translate into any language, excellent community support, local support around the world, use of other Open Source components.
In the current economic downturn, Open Source software has become increasingly attractive to users and companies, as it helps them to save a lot of money. XOOPS is definitely one of these Open Source projects that can provide major financial savings.

Hard to gauge
It's hard to consider any open source CMS a world leader as there are no real stats as to how many people are using them. There could be 25k downloads but how many of those are implemented?
Hard to gauge
Fair point.
Based on the statistics here:
http://www.blogsweek.com/en/powered-by/
there at least 38,920,000 Web pages powered by XOOPS. Of course, the number is higher, as not all XOOPS sites use the "Powered by XOOPS" credit. That should give you some indication of the XOOPS customer base.
you mean 38,920 sites mamba.
you mean 38,920 sites mamba. not 38,920,000 which means 38 million.
you mean 38,920 sites mamba.
I quoted what they said: "38,920,000 Web Pages" not sites.
As they say: "in thousands of pages found"
which goes with what modx
which goes with what modx said. statistics aren't a valid source of usage or popularity.
yes it's pages found.
which means you could have 38 sites with 1000 pages on each site & those 1000 pages all contain powered by xoops in the footer, that would mean only 38 sites are using xoops.
doesn't give much credit to the ranking now does it?
Statistics
> doesn't give much credit to the ranking now does it?
Not really.
The hard data is: over 25,000 downloads in just three months. That's what started this discussion.
MODx wanted to see some indicator that those installations are actually used.
I thought, that number of pages "Powered by XOOPS" would be a good indicator, but if this is not enough, you can take a look at those two as well:
http://www.blogsweek.com/en/most-linked-...
XOOPS is #4
http://www.blogsweek.com/en/most-visited...
XOOPS is #6
Which is totally consistent with the #4 rank on:
http://www.blogsweek.com/en/powered-by/
Now add to it the fact that:
* XOOPS was a finalist in both 2008 SourceForge Community Awards, and 2008 Packt Publishing CMS Awards,
* XOOPS got awards in Brazil and China,
* XOOPS is consistently in top 30 ranked projects on SourceForge (out of over 100,000 if I'm not mistaken)
* XOOPS is the most downloaded CMS on SourceForge
and I think that with all this information put together, XOOPS deserves to be called "one of world’s leading Open Source CMS" :)
Of course, this is a subjective view, and I am not trying to convince you. This is only to show you the thought process that I used to get to this conclusion :)
