Drupal was announced the winner in Packt Publishing's 2009 award for Best PHP Based Open Source CMS. Instant replay at the finish line may have been required as Packt reports that Wordpress and Joomla! were not too far behind the leading CMS.

We are pleased to announce that Drupal has won the Best Open Source PHP CMS Category in the 2009 Open Source CMS Award. This category featured a very close contest between the top three, Drupal, WordPress, and Joomla! in which Drupal ended up as the overall choice for the judges and the public.

Drupal receives $2,000 in award money with both Wordpress and Joomla! as joint runner ups collecting $500 each. As Packt notes, this is the first time Wordpress has worked its way into the top three in the Best PHP CMS category.

While Drupal and Joomla! have always consistently featured among the top three in this category, WordPress made its way into the top five for the first time. The fact that it was outranked by Drupal by a very slight margin indicates how popular it has become with users as well as developers over the past year.

This award is another validation for Wordpress that it is finally losing its reputation as a blog-only application. The yearly tug-of-war between Drupal and Joomla! has now become a three-way tie with Wordpress now in the mix.

Hahaha, very funny, don't understand how can you even think of "Wordpress as a winner. Joomla is the best open source cms out there, it's just that it's community is working on CMS instead of building a Fake reputation... ;)

Open source CMS

Although joomla should have been at the top on its overall facets on 2009 , it has to be highlighted that wordpress too have considerably progressed and deserves credit for its hard work too....

As far as preference of developers goes i don't think too many developers carry a differentiable mindset as wordpress & Joomla are both pretty user friendly in its easiness of use & implementation.

No doubt Drupal is powerful,

No doubt Drupal is powerful, But is is truly open source.
Drupal had launched a marketing campaign long ago to increase Drupals popularity.
While the community never helped newbies and the general developer
They had a sort of cult running, where you had to buy the tutorials and learn.

you needed to be a hard core programmer(no place for a designer looking to build CMS).

I knew there was an agenda and today the agenda is clear. Drupal has launched Drupal Gardens and a paid version. Nothing is a free.
It was a very commercial project that used the Open source to introduce itself and the founders are now rolling in money.
The Paid conferences the training sessions. The Books of Drupal are so costly.
I am glad I stayed away from Drupal Joomla with 1.6 has really caught on.
The problem is that this award is based on Votes and Drupal community are a closed community at the core who put more effort into voting and promoting drupal rather then developing a perfecting it "out of the box". They use their programming skill to perfect Drupal and they know exactly how.

While Joomla community has been just working on making Joomla better.
