New research from Mimecast finds that the role of the inbox is changing as users spend more than half their working day using email
Information workers’ reliance on email is turning them into ‘Inbox Workers’ who spend the majority of their time on email and shun social media at work, according to new research launched today by Mimecast®, the leading supplier of cloud-based email archiving, continuity and security for Microsoft Exchange, Hosted Exchange and Office 365.
The research – the second in Mimecast’s Shape of Email series – surveyed 2,500 information workers in the US, UK and South Africa to explore the average employee’s attitudes to, and frustrations with, email. The report found that on average an information worker will use email for four hours per day; equivalent to more than 37 full 24-hour days over a working year, 111 working days, or 888 working hours.
However, users are also frustrated by the limitations of email. Just one in four users report high levels of satisfaction with their email functionality and one in three expect email and social media to converge in the next five years. It is clear that email needs to evolve if it is to cope with the demands of modern day Inbox Workers, who see email not just as a communications tool but as a file store, search engine and a collaboration platform.
Last week, Agility officially announced the release of their new Agility Magazine Publishing Suite. The Magazine Suite is a cloud-based website publishing solution that is designed for online magazines and blogs. Over the past year, I've had a chance to watch Agility evolve and improve this new product and recently CMS Report completed a migration to Agility's Magazine Suite. Our good friend Cheryl McKinnon, founder of Candy Strategies, tweeted us about the latest news from the Open Source Alliance of Canada (OSACAN). The alliance is a non-profit organization, founded to promote, foster and sustain the use of open source technology in Canadian government. Yesterday, OSACAN announced the establishment of a center of excellence to promote the use of open source technology in the Canadian public sector.

I do not know when it exactly happened, but a number of years ago I decided to become a pacifist. I am a pacifist that is in the war of open source versus proprietary. In my opinion, the debate over licensing and software development processes is only mildly interesting as it is the quality of the end product that matters to me most. I walk the fine line of being an advocate for open source and a defender of proprietary software and admittedly I've confused a lot of people that have taken up a particular side of the argument. However, there is always room for reasonable civil discussions of any topic when new data and new perspective is given. This is perhaps why within the past week I enjoyed reading a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Acquia that shows the value of open source without necessarily attacking the value of proprietary software.

It took a new article posting yesterday on Accrisoft's blog before I realized the company recently released a new version of their content management system, Accrisoft Freedom CMS v8.2. Freedom CMS is used for building and managing dynamic, database-driven websites where Accrisoft handles the hosting themselves, eliminating the need for in-house server management. Accrisoft is one of the first CMS companies that convinced me that the cloud wasn't as scary as I thought for creating, hosting, and managing content management solutions.
