New Drupal 4.7 theme available... Blue_mark

Screenshot of Blue Mark themeSomething old is new again. The Blue_mark theme for Drupal 4.7 is available at CMS Report. The Blue_mark theme uses Drupal 4.7's default theming engine, PHPTemplate. This theme is released under the GPL.

The Blue_mark theme was originally offered by Charles Lowe and available for download at his site, cyberdash.com. The original theme was written for Drupal 4.4's Xtemplate theme engine. I maintained the theme through Drupal 4.6 for a personal site of mine. With the switchover to the PHPTemplate theme engine as the Drupal 4.7 defualt, significant work was needed to keep old Blue_mark alive. The Blue Marine theme was used as a starting point. Minor tweaks were made to Blue Marine's PHP files and significant changes were made in the CSS.

I've made the themes available for download in both Zip and Tar formats:

Depending on your viewpoint, the Blue_Mark theme could be considered either retro or outdated. Although, I no longer use the theme, I used it for too long and couldn't let it slip by after the release of Drupal 4.7. If there is enough interest, I'll make this theme available at Drupal.org. Please let me know your thoughts at CMS Report.

#1 Very Nice!

I'm a newer drupal user and was unaware of this theme. Tweaked the CSS a bit (to add the gradients back in, lighten the block borders and zero out the border on the header) and it's a good bet I'll use this as my default theme. Very lightweight and easy on the eyes. Thanks so much for bringing this to 4.7. I do think you should offer it at the official drupal site. Many of the themes there look good but end up being broken in certain situations.

I'm surprised I like the gradient back in the theme. When I first used the Blue_mark theme I removed the gradient because I thought it was distracting. However, it looks a lot nicer than I remembered. I may have to do the same here...offering both alternatives. I'm working on an idea for including more than just Blue_mark at Drupal. I'm waiting for a block of time though before proposing the project.

Nice job on the current content of your site, Total Nonsense. I'll have to visit from time to time.

#3 The gradients.

I think the gradients look decent because they're very subtle and I noticed that they didn't look good unless I made the box borders a much lighter color (in this case a shade of gray). I think I had to zero out the margins on the header to make it not have a gap on the sides (which I noticed it did in Firefox). I'm not a CSS guru by any means, but I found it easy to make these changes on your theme. It looks nice and loads quickly, so I'm really happy with it.

#4 It would be nice to make

It would be nice to make this theme available at drupal.org/project/Themes. Also, it would be nice to port this drupal theme to drupal 5.

#5 That's been in the plan

That's been in the plan...to make the theme available in Drupal 5 and also to throw it on drupal.org, but it keeps being pushed on the back burner.  For the most part, the theme is based on Blue Marine's template so I don't think it would be too difficult when to to do.  I likely want to take a look first at Drupal 6 to see if there is any drastic change for the theming.
