Comparing Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal

Mike Gifford, Open Concept, commented here at CMS Report that his company had just posted a report they did for a client comparing three open source content management systems. His company needed to recommend to their client whether Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal would be a good replacement for their current CMS, Back-End (BE).

We've just done a report for one of our clients comparing Drupal, Joomla & Wordpress for (1) multilingual capabilities (also called internationalization or i18n); (2) end-user usability; and (3) developer usability.

As a national organization in Canada, being bilingual was a must. Check out our CMS comparison.

This is a good report and I'll let you read it on your own to find out which CMS they recommended the client utilize for their next CMS. I like the fact that the analysis compared criteria consistently and observed pros/cons in each of the Web applications.

I also find it interesting that they referenced a post I did last year comparing Drupal and Joomla as well as an article from Gadgetopia's Dean Barker. It's interesting in that both Dean and I have both gotten a lot of mileage out of those posts and it shows just how much we all feed from each other when it it comes to writing about information technology.

That is *excellent* analysis. It's too bad that Joomla! v 1.5 was not used or referenced, at least. To a large degree, that will change any evaluation of Joomla!. In some ways, such evaluations will not be as positive - for example, there is not a wealth of extensions available at this time for J! v 1.5. But, architecturally, it is a much improved environment. Those comments do *not* detract from Drupal's strengths which I completely concur with the findings of this analysis. I am confident the authors will enjoy and gain great benefit from working with Drupal. In fact, I believe J! v 1.5 development will create a very enjoyable experience as well, much like is the case now with Drupal. Thanks much for highlighting this! http://OpenSourceCommunity.org

Joomla 1.5 is not available

Joomla 1.5 is not available in a stable version, so it does not make sense to compare it with systems that are ready to be used in production systems. You could compare Joomla 1.5 and Drupal 6 though, but this wouldn't help someone who needs to choose a system now.

6 vs 1.5

I think a comparison early next year of Joomla 1.5 and Drupal 6 would be very interesting. I know the various features of both are expected to be different.

I agree with yaph's statement.  We pretty much have to compare today's production versions.  The promise of "better" isn't really fulfilled until proven.  Having said that, I'm excited for the day final versions of Drupal 6 and Joomla 1.5 are released.

I hate textual communications! lol! I am well aware that J! v 1.5 RC1 has not yet been general released and did not mean my comment as a negative criticism of a well prepared and considered report. I should have worded it differently. What I meant was it will be interesting to see how Joomla! v 1.5 stacks up when it's released - which will be very soon, now. On one hand, there will be far fewer extensions available, but, on the other, that MVC application architecture will be geek magnet material. Kind regards! Amy :) http://OpenSourceCommunity.org

Nice Report

Thank you for making this report content available. It's done very nicely. I was really interested in this since the association that I work for is also both Canadian and bilingual. I notice from the feedback that I get from others that the differences between Joomla! and DRUPAL, in terms of preference, has a tendency to divide between those with more technical ability leaning toward DRUPAL and those with more of a designer background preferring Joomla! This is just a general observation on my part based on a very loose poll of the people I know who are familiar with DRUPAL and Joomla! I'm hoping to gain more knowledge with regards ti DRUPAL in the near future. It has an impressive following.
