IT Quote of the Week

This week Peter Lamont, Chairman of the Board for the Mambo Foundation, announced that Mambo Communities and Ansearch Ltd mutually agreed not to proceed with the acquisition of Mambo Communities. It is from his post that we have decided to choose our IT Quote of the Week:

To some degree the original acquisition plans flushed out certain people who had ulterior motives for Mambo and helped us clean up our community by exiting themselves. One thing becomes obvious during the events of the past few months: Open Source initiatives will always attract people who will use FUD in an attempt to take control.

- Peter Lamont, Mambo News, June 20, 2006

Some understanding of recent history is needed to put this quote in the proper context. For the past year there has been much talk regarding the bitterness between the Mambo team and some of its former developers. The bitterness began shortly after there was a push to move the control of the Mambo project from an ad hoc group to a non-profit corporation called the Mambo Foundation. The end result was a fork of Mambo with the former Mambo developers starting a new open source project called Joomla.

Each group has of course touted their own perspective to why the fork developed and who, if any, are at fault. Needless to say, there will be some that disagree with Mr. Lamont's version of the facts. While Mr. Lamont may not have the last word, we hope his words mark the ending of a very long chapter. Although Mambo and Joomla are now separate projects, perhaps develoeprs and users from both parties can now move forward to happier times.
