ATutor First Open Source IMS Common Cartridge Compliant LMS

ATutor 1.6.4 has acheived IMS Common Cartridge 1.0 Lite compliance. And, it's not just a cartridge player, it's a whole common cartridge authoring and management system, built right into the LMS.  No need for third party tools to create cartridges. And, no "lock in." Compliant cartridges are exported from the system so its easy to move content from ATutor into other elearning environments.

Common Cartridge: The primary addition in ATutor 1.6.4  is support for the IMS Common Cartridge Lite 1.0 content interoperability standard. This standard combines IMS Content Packaging and IMS Question Test Interoperability (QTI), as well introducing tool interoperability with the ability to now associate activities with content. Changes for Common Cartridge have also added Web links to external Web sites as content pages. (Thanks to the Ontario Enabling Change program for funding this work, and the University of Bologna's Department of Computer Science for their contribution.)

LCMS ATutor 1.6 released

Recieved an e-mail a couple days ago from ATutor.ca that that there is a new version of ATutor available, version 1.6. ATutor is an open source learning content management system (LCMS or sometimes just LMS). As the project describest, with Atutor "educators can quickly assemble, package, and redistribute Web-based instructional content, easily import prepackaged content, and conduct their courses online. Students learn in an adaptive learning environment."

The two most significant changes with Atutor 1.6 include:

  • Adoption of a single character set, UTF-8, which provides universal language support.
  • A new look-and-feel changes and updates to the default themes

ATutor 1.5.4 to be released soon

A new version of ATutor is expected to be released in late April 2007 with a beta version already available for downloading.  ATutor is a Web-based Learning Content Management System (LCMS) designed with accessibility and adaptability in mind.  The new version of ATutor, 1.5.4, contains quite a number of changes with the most significant changes listed below:
  • New Test Question Types: Ordering questions require the test taker to correctly assign given items in a particular logical order or rank, and Matching questions require students to pair question items in one column to alphabetized answer items in another column. And a first for any LMS, Matching questions can be presented in a graphical Drag-and-Drop interface. 
  • QTI 2.1 Test Question Export: Test questions can be exported according to the QTI 2.1 specification.
  • X-Sendfile Support: If installed and enabled by the webserver, ATutor will use the X-Sendfile header to send content files to the browser, which increases performance greatly.
  • Guest Tests: If enabled, guests to a course can now take practice tests.
  • Authenticated Access: Instructors can now allow access to their private or protected course to guests via the use of a secret URL.
  • Forum Post Editing: Students can now edit their own posts within a specified number of minutes.
  • Improved User Administration: Administrators can now batch update user accounts.

ATutor 1.5.3 RC2 Released

A new release of ATutor, a learning content management system, is out. I'd be curious if anyone has used this particular CMS. How was your experience with ATutor and would you recommend it? From ATutor.ca:

ATutor 1.5.3 has been released, with many new features. The most significant changes include the integration of the ACollab group functionality into ATutor, creating a *new group user level*, and development of a collection group level tools. ACollab users can now configure ATutor to provide most of the functionality ACollab had been providing. Another key feature added in this release is the *File Storage* utility, a personal file manager for students, groups, and instructors. It includes an *Assignment Drop Box* extension, where students can submit assignments, and instructors can manage them. is now available for review and testing.
