I just spent much of my morning looking at all the great content management related stories CMS Report covered this past year. Below are the top ten stories of 2012 that we posted here at CMSReport.com. The stories in this list are ranked based on the rate they were viewed since they were first appeared online. 

Unbelievably, I spent most of 2012 without writing a single article related to Nuxeo, an open source content management platform. CMS Report missed the opportunity for a great story in September when Nuxeo Platform 5.6 was released. At the time, we were busy migrating our own site to a new CMS and probably missed a lot of CMS stories that month. Luckily, we do have a Nuxeo related article to write before the year's end, the release of Nuxeo Studio 2.9.

A few days ago, WordPress 3.5 was released and I originally planned to write the typical "what is new in WordPress" article similar to what I've done in the past for CMS Report. However, I thought this time around I would also discuss how I'm using WordPress to support the website of one of my favorite photographers, Karen Ruby of Dakota Imagery. Certainly, in this article there is no cause for you to suspect my opinions are biased with regard to her photography skills despite the fact we've been married for 11 years and she is the mother of my child.

SilverStripe Framework and CMS 3.0.3 was released earlier this week. This new version of SilverStripe provides security fixes, bugfixes and a number of minor enhancements since 3.0.2.  As with all 3.0.x releases, it is drop in compatible with 3.0, making upgrading simple.

Last week, Agility officially announced the release of their new Agility Magazine Publishing Suite. After ten years of creating digital content management solutions for top brands like Subaru, Doritos, Uncle Ben's, Campbell's, Oprah Network, W Network, Cineplex, Shoppers Drug Mart, and CTV, Agility is moving further into the media and publishing industry. The Magazine Suite is a cloud-based website publishing solution that is designed for online magazines and blogs. 

Our good friend Cheryl McKinnon, founder of Candy Strategies, tweeted us about the latest news from the Open Source Alliance of Canada (OSACAN). The alliance is a non-profit organization, founded to promote, foster and sustain the use of open source technology in Canadian government. Yesterday, OSACAN announced the establishment of a center of excellence to promote the use of open source technology in the Canadian public sector.

I do not know when it exactly happened, but a number of years ago I decided to become a pacifist. I am a pacifist that is in the war of open source versus proprietary. In my opinion, the debate over licensing and software development processes is only mildly interesting as it is the quality of the end product that matters to me most. I walk the fine line of being an advocate for open source and a defender of proprietary software. Admittedly I've confused a lot of people that have chosen to take sides in this war. However, there is always room for reasonable civil discussions of any topic when new data and new perspective is given.

It took a new article posting yesterday on Accrisoft's blog before I realized the company recently released a new version of their content management system, Accrisoft Freedom CMS v8.2. Freedom CMS is used for building and managing dynamic, database-driven websites where Accrisoft handles the hosting themselves, eliminating the need for in-house server management. Accrisoft is one of the first CMS companies that convinced me that the cloud wasn't as scary as I thought for creating, hosting, and managing content management solutions.
