CMS Report's Top Ten Stories of 2009

The level of interest in content management systems astounds me. Each year, I continue to see at CMS Report an increase of visitors looking for information on content management. Our stories tend to focus on open source CMS more than proprietary applications and evidently that's the subject matter that our readers want to read.

Below are the top ten stories of 2009 that were posted here at CMSReport.com. As you can see, stories involving Drupal, WordPress, Joomla!, Alfresco, and Nuxeo took center stage. These stories might not have been the ten I would have personally picked for this list, but I'll respect the numbers behind their ranking.

  1. Mollom: A solution for comment spam
  2. 2009 Best Open Source PHP CMS: Drupal wins, Wordpress and Joomla! not far behind
  3. Serving a home for my Drupal site
  4. WordPress leads the Packt as 2009 Overall Best Open Source CMS
  5. Allen Ellis: Why the Packt CMS Competition is Broken, and How to Fix It
  6. Google PageRank
  7. Alfresco Module Obtains U.S. DoD 5015.02 Records Management Certification
  8. Using Wordpress city saves $19,000
  9. Cheryl McKinnon, Nuxeo, and Open Source
  10. Drupal Gardens preview video by Acquia

The interest in Nuxeo took me by surprise and I'll be adding the CMS to my top 30 CMS Focus page as time allows. As always, our thanks to all those who continue to return to this site to read the stories, join in on the conversation, and even submit articles. As I've said before, I'm not sure we would be doing this if it wasn't for the interest shown by others visiting the site.

eZ follows the release of eZ Publish 4.1 with an aggressive hiring plan for eZ Labs, the firm's core development team, with the aim of accelerating eZ Publish development.

"We are looking for talented software engineers, testers and documentation editors in Leuven (Belgium), Skien (Norway) or possibly in other eZ offices" says Paul Borgermans, head of eZ Labs.

Naming Roland Benedetti, the former Managing Director for eZ Western Europe, as VP Product Management is an important step for the eZ Ecosystem, helping to clearly delineate Project Management from Engineering.

"This new organization is the result of a long internal project", says eZ CTO, Bård Farstad, adding, "We were very much focused on making eZ a profitable company in 2008 but wished we'd been able to invest more in development. eZ Find 2.0 and eZ Publish 4.1 were great accomplishments, but 2009 will be even better. Splitting Product Management and Engineering will improve our communication with our community, our customers, and our markets to deliver a professional road map, as well as optimize the use of our core resources".

Gadgetopia's Deane Barker becomes a Drupal newbie

Bryan's picture

During the past couple years I've had some brief but rewarding content management discussions with Deane Barker from Gadgetopia and Blend Interactive.  Dean has worked with quite a few Web content management systems over the years and appears to be most passionate to using eZ Publish.  Naturally, our discussions almost always involve Dean talking about ez Publish and me talking about Drupal.  Unfortunately, as I am more of a system administrator than a developer, the information I have been able to provide him about Drupal has always been limited.

Well, it looks as if Deane Barker has finally decided to get on the Drupal learning curve and find out more about this great CMS.

I’m working with Drupal for the first time on a hobby project I’m doing with Seth Gottlieb (about which you’ll hear much more later…). Adam Kalsey — Drupal ninja that he is — is advising us on the technical implementation, and he’s been a great help.

Why Drupal? Because I didn’t know it, and figured I needed to. Seth and I, after all, had the discussion
about how there are people like to feel smart and people that like to
feel stupid. Learning Drupal has made me feel plenty stupid, and that’s
exciting. And there’s no better time to feel stupid while learning than
on a project you’re doing for yourself.

I'm always excited to see very talented content management people discuss their initial experiences with a CMS.  If Deane writes more about Drupal, I suspect his writings will be very similar to the Drupal writings of Sacha Chua.
