Living in a world that is on the verge of explosion with the sheer volume of data points, 'big data' organizations are increasingly on the lookout for a comprehensive platform which can bring the required business intelligence for providing conclusive insights. Besides being capable of sophisticated data analysis and reporting, the ideal platform should also possess the ability to represent data in a way that stands out from the rest of the competing data streams.

WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla power three-fourths of the world’s CMS-based websites. A few simple steps will keep your CMS-powered website secure:

• Keep your CMS software up-to-date. Immediately install all updates to core software and plug-ins. If you don’t visit your admin panel daily, schedule a reminder in your smartphone for updating your CMS regularly.

• Perform regular backups. Backup your site and its database at least weekly, perhaps at the same time you check it for updates.

It goes without saying that both WordPress and Drupal are two of the biggest open-source content management systems available today. It’s also well known that WordPress has garnered a bigger user base since its inception in 2003, with a current user base that’s nearly 10 times that of Drupal.

The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), issued a public service announcement last week recommending website administrators to update their Wordpress sites. More specifically, the bureau wants you to update your third-party WordPress plugins.

At the beginning of 21st century, the open-source CMS started to enjoy widespread popularity, which in turn helped open web content creation to a larger group. Within this group of content creators, a variety of skillsets and end goals existed, which meant different CMSs ended up targeting and occupying different niches of the market. Drupal became a solution for websites that needed a more complex structure, so they developed their core features to satisfy the needs of complex content organisation and user roles. On the other hand, Wordpress targeted users looking to create simpler websites that could be easily developed. In addition to these main forces in the CMS market, a lot of proprietary solutions spawned.

Welcome to the last article of 2014. This year, CMS Report published over 280 articles related to content management systems, content strategy, business strategy, and information technology. During this time we also declined about an equal amount of articles that weren't quite right for our readers. In each case, I'm grateful for the many authors that submitted their articles for review and publication. 

Wordpress has dominated the list of top content management systems for years; however, this could soon change. With the popularity of SquareSpace and other content management systems rising, Wordpress could soon see users leaving for a better suited website builder.

SquareSpace now has over 1.8 million websites and this number grows daily. The number is nowhere near Wordpress’s 60million websites; however, it is growing significantly annually and could kick Wordpress off the top spot in a few years.
